PACIFIC GAS & ELECTRIC PARTNERS WITH THE CA CC
TTT at Las PositasHybrid Vehicle Training
Catherine Swenson from the EWD Training & Development Initiative has been participating with PG&E on their PowerPathways project for some time. During the course of those meetings, PG&E revealed they would be purchasing more than 200 electric hybrid vehicles. The immediate need arose for the training of up to 200 PG&E fleet mechanics to be trained in the new hybrid maintenance technology.

The California Corporate College was brought on board to facilitate the delivery of this new training through the community colleges that were local to the 8 sites PG&E selected to receive the instruction.

The scope of work included a 3-day Train-the-Trainer session for faculty from identified districts in the two hybrid technologies (Ford & GM). The first TTT was delivered at Las Positas CC, in which 16 faculty members participated. Proprietary materials have been provided by PG&E from Ford and GM.

The second phase of the project, in which we are in the middle, includes the delivery of the 24 hour training program at the 8 PG&E sites throughout the state for 12-14 fleet mechanics per site.

College districts participating in the project include: Los Rios, Butte-Glenn, Peralta, State Center, Hartnell, San Jose-Evergreen, Santa Rosa, and San Joaquin-Delta.
CA CC MEMBER DISTRICT SPOTLIGHT
Chaffey Logo

Chaffey College had a small Economic Development Contract Training program for several years before Kathy Dutton, Director of Economic Development, took it over about 6 years ago. Since that time the program has experienced significant growth.

Kathy's program works with entrepreneurs, large and small companies and organizations, as well as community-based, faith-based and governmental organizations.

They offer job coaching, productivity and gap analysis, technical and customized training covering a myriad of subject matter (including VESL), as well as consultation on organizational change and continuous improvement.

The Economic Development program at Chaffey has enjoyed a great deal of success, but Kathy feels the one success that stands out the most for her is the Manufacturers' Council. The Council's membership includes over 30 manufacturing and logistics industry partners who faithfully attend meetings every other month to discuss workforce needs, collaborate on training calendars and build customized training programs resulting in increased skills for their employees as well as providing a global competitive edge.

When asked why Chaffey joined the CA CC, Kathy responded, "I have waited a long time for a statewide quality training resource coming from the California Community College System. Business and industry need the community colleges to provide consistent high quality training that includes a set curriculum delivered with effective strategies. CA CC has put the whole package together and if they are successful in breaking down the silos at individual colleges, will be the wave of the future in delivering Contract Education."
